Most of these towers have entertainment for locals and tourists in the form of clubs, shopping, dining, and observation decks where you can get some amazing views of the city. But with the excellent climate, outside activities are popular too.
Nairobi has an average high of 76 degrees with an average low of 52 degrees, so it is always a comfortable temperature there. The two largest parks in the city include Nairobi National Park, where you can go on safari, and Uhuru Park, which has a lake and several national monuments. You may also enjoy visiting the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage by Nairobi National Park, where they have dozens of bottle-fed babies.

Museums
With over a dozen museums, you can spend a week in Nairobi without enjoying them all. From galleries full of art and pottery to the railway museum full of old engines, you can learn all about Nairobi and Kenya as well as Africa. Here are some of our favorite choices:
- Nairobi National Museum: Where else can you learn the most about Nairobi? Of course, the national museum has the most information about the history and culture with exhibitions of fossils, money, taxidermy, and artifacts. They even have a skull from one of our human ancestors that is 18 million years old. You can find this museum on Kipande Road, about 10 minutes from town.
- Karen Blixen Museum: If you have never seen or heard of the 1985 movie, Out of Africa, be sure to see it before going to Nairobi. Then visit this museum on Karen Road about 11 miles from the city. The movie was about Karen Blixen, who lived in Nairobi on a 4,500-acre farm where she employed 800 Kikuyu workers. During her time there, she built a school and looked after the Kikuyu tribe, helping them with food and medical care. The museum is a tribute to Karen and holds artifacts and information about her and the Kikuyu tribe as well as the 1985 film.
- Fort Jesus Museum: Built in the late 16th century in southern Mombasa, the Portuguese kept this area under control for over a century. This was the site of one of the first places where Western civilization was able to control the trade routes of the Indian Ocean. The fort, with its walls and bastions, is still largely intact, reflecting Renaissance architecture. Interestingly, the fort was built in the shape of a man lying on his back facing the sea. Be sure to stop by the fort on Makadara in Mombasa and bring your camera.
Shopping
Everyone likes to shop while they are on vacation. Especially in a new city. Whether you are searching for the perfect souvenirs for the folks back home or something for yourself, you will find it in Nairobi. - Malls: Two Rivers Mall on Limuru Road is one of the largest and most popular malls in the city. Browse 700,000 square feet of space with 200 shops like Nike, Hugo Boss, and Woolworths, along with dozens of eateries. The 200-foot Ferris wheel and lighted fountains add to the fun. Garden City Mall on Thika Road is the second-largest and has 120 shops as well as a 3-acre recreational park. And the Junction at the corner of King’ara, Naivasha, and Ngong Road has over 100 name-brand and local stores.
- Markets: If you want to browse through handmade clothing, jewelry, and household items, check out Kariokor Market on Ring Road with over 200 stalls. They specialize in leather goods, curios, and footwear. For great deals on clothing, go to the Gikomba Market on Kamukunji Road. It is the most famous clothing market in Kenya. For food, check out Muthurwa Market on Ring Road or the Ngara Open Air Market on Ngara Road.
- Specialty Shops: Anselm’s Kitengela Hot Glass is an amazing place to watch the artists make treasures from blown glass. You can find it near Ongata Rongai by Nairobi National Park in a planetarium. For a truly unique gift item, go to Matbronze Wildlife Art to browse the gallery before buying something special. It is in the Junction Mall parking lot on Ngong Road. Grab some handmade items made from old flip flops and other shoe soles at Ocean Sole in Karen Village.
Dining
Whether you want to try some local specialties or another type of cuisine, Nairobi has a large selection. Street vendors sell food along every road if you are hungry and in a hurry. Or you can enjoy a nice meal in a fine dining establishment.
- Local Food: Try some African barbecue at the Carnivore Restaurant on Langata Road, where you can chow down on some delicious steak however you like it with whatever sauce you want. The Ocean Basket on Ring Road has a variety of seafood like shrimp, cod, mussels, or squid. For an affordable meal in a nice atmosphere, try K'Osewe Ranalo Foods on Kimathi Street. They are well-known for their tilapia and ugali (corn fufu).
- American Food: If you would rather stick with American food, try Jiko for a burger and fries made right. Located on Limuru Road in the Tribe Hotel, they also have pork, lamb, and squid too. You can also hit up the local McDonald’s. There are several of those. And if you want pizza, there is a Domino’s as well as a Pizza Hut on Limuru Road. Or try the Pizza Inn on Valley Road in Upper Hill Estates.
- Fine Dining: If you would rather be served like royalty, head to Sikia Fine Dining Restaurant on Kenya Road for European food. They have five-course meals with lamb, seafood, and even some local cuisine like calamari. On Ruaka Road at The Lord Erroll, you’ll find a fancy spot with piano music and delicious food that looks as good as it tastes. If you want some fancy French or Italian food in a posh and polished establishment, 45 Degrees Kitchen on Marurui Road in Garden Estates is the place to go.
