Oktoberfest Munich 2024

The time for fun and good beer begins with the arrival of Oktoberfest

A bit of history for those curious: the first Oktoberfest was held way back in 1810! Now known as Oktoberfest, this significant event began as a celebration of the marriage between Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen in October.

What started as a love story has evolved into the world’s largest beer festival. Today, this beer festival celebrates not just love, but friendship, drinks, food, music, and many other joys.

Oktoberfest 2024 will take place at its traditional location, Theresienwiese, in the heart of Munich, Germany. The festival runs for sixteen days, from September 21st to October 6th, and gets more popular every year! Last year, as many as 7.2 million people visited Munich Oktoberfest, and this year the same number of visitors are expected from all over the world in celebration of great beer!

Don't miss the opening day ceremony, which begins at noon at the Schottenhamel tent. On this day, you can join the parade of Oktoberfest landlords, who own the large beer tents. As the heads of traditional Bavarian breweries, they play a key role at Oktoberfest. This parade is a great presentation of Bavarian culture with many interesting things to experience, such as music, craftsmanship, and more.

What to Expect When Attending Oktoberfest 2024

It’s important to know what the weather might be like and what to expect at the festival beforehand.

This year, expect typical autumnal weather during Oktoberfest: cool days with temperatures ranging from 16°C to 19°C and chilly mornings and evenings around 8°C to 10°C. Make sure you bring an umbrella or a raincoat and wear warm clothes.

If you're thinking that mulled wine would warm you up, you're spot on! Even though beer is the main attraction, there are plenty of other options available, including wine, sparkling wine, lemonade, water, non-alcoholic beer, and much more.

Security Protocols

Safety always comes first! Here are a few steps that the festival has taken to make you feel secure:

  • Friendly police officers are on site
  • Bags will be checked at the entrance
  • Certain items like weapons or glass bottles are forbidden
  • Medical help is readily available if you need it

Tickets

While you don't need a ticket for this free festival, you should make a reservation for seats in the beer tents to get the full experience. The cost of the beer tent reservations depends on the size of the tent. Be sure to grab your food and drink vouchers ahead of time!

How to Get to and From Oktoberfest

There are many modes of transportation you can use to make your way to Munich Oktoberfest and back to your home or accommodation. If driving isn't an option, you can use public transport, such as the U-Bahn (subway), trams, buses, or S-Bahn (commuter rail).

Tips to Make the Most Out of Oktoberfest 2024

  • Make sure to arrive early, it’s guaranteed to be crowded. There are many tents with different atmospheres, from cozy to vibrant and lively, giving you the chance to sample a mix of sounds, sights, and flavors. Arriving on time will give you more opportunities to explore the various foods, drinks, music, and other attractions.
  • We recommend dressing in traditional Bavarian clothes. such as Dirndl for women and Lederhosen for men. A Dirndl is a charming dress, consisting of a snug bodice, a full skirt, and an apron, while Lederhosen are leather shorts worn with a crisp shirt. By wearing them you are stepping into a centuries-old tradition and celebrating Bavarian culture with style!
  • Explore the cuisine, as the festival is as much about food as it is about beer; there are numerous delicious classic Bavarian dishes, such as roast chicken, pretzel, and Weisswurst. Oktoberfest food is a must and pairs wonderfully with beer.
  • Check out other attractions that this beer festival offers, especially if you are with your family or friends. You can enjoy carnival rides, such as the Ferris wheel, roller coaster, carousel, plus many others. And if you're up for a thrill, check out the haunted house for some extra fun!
  • Experience good music. You can find live bands in various tents and sing along to traditional German and international songs.
  • Explore its history - if you are a history lover, you can visit the Oktoberfest Museum and see many fascinating old photographs that capture the festival's past and evolution.
  • Find out more about Bavarian tradition and culture by experiencing the traditional costume parade on the first Sunday in October dressed in your Dirndl or Lederhosen!
