Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, FL

While not directly in Tampa, Tropicana Field is the home stadium of the Tampa Bay Rays. Located in St. Petersburg, Florida, just across the bay from Tampa, this massive stadium is a huge draw for locals and visitors. Over the years, the stadium has had a few different names, including the Florida Suncoast Dome and the ThunderDome. Regardless of what it’s called, the venue’s 1.1 million square feet and capacity to seat over 42,000 spectators make it an elite US ballpark.

Tropicana Field doesn't host much other than major league baseball games, but it does happen. Everything from concerts to wrestling to football has been played here. These days, though, the field is typically used exclusively for baseball to avoid the stress on the turf that other events can cause. And let's not gloss over the fact that St. Petersburg and Tampa are both filled with activities, attractions, dining, shops, and more for travelers to explore. A few notable ones include Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, The Florida Aquarium, Tampa Riverwalk, Adventure Island, and the Tampa Museum of Art.

As you’re planning to head to the ballpark for a game, take a few minutes to get to know the Tropicana Field bag policy and other rules. Remember that if you’re carrying large bags with you, the best place for them before the game is with us. So let's take a closer look.

Getting to Tropicana Field

There are several ways to reach Tropicana Field. If you're driving, there are plenty of parking lots surrounding the stadium, and there is even overflow parking. With that said, it's still wise to book a parking pass ahead just so you know you're guaranteed a spot. Because you pre-pay for the pass, it also speeds things up on game day.

Public transportation options include the SunRunner and the Baseball Looper Trolley. The SunRunner bus route stops on the north side of Tropicana Field and runs every 15 minutes during peak times. The Baseball Looper Trolley has two main stops for the free shuttle service: Second Street South (between Central and First) and 16th Street South of 3rd.

Uber and Lyft are widely available in the area, but your driver can’t just drop you off anywhere. Pickup and drop-off points are exclusively on 4th Avenue South near Parking Lot 7 and on 10th Street South between Lots 6 and 8. From there, you can walk to the venue.

Fans can bring cameras to the park, but they need to be personal cameras. Video cameras are permitted in the ballpark as long as they are hand-held. Your camera and video camera cannot get in the way of other guest's enjoyment and lenses longer than 12" are prohibited. All tripods, monopods, and selfie sticks are denied admission.

Cashless Stadium

Like so many other professional sporting venues across the country, this one is cashless. Guests will need to use a credit card or debit card when purchasing alcoholic beverages, food, snacks, merchandise, and anything else. You also have the option to download the MLB app and use the Rays Pay feature for mobile payments.
